The Future of Sherab Ling

Sherab Ling is seen as a place of refuge where parents can send their children to be cared for. The parents hope when they send their children to the monastery that they will study hard and maybe one day become monks. The ethos behind the study to benefit as many people in the world as they can.

They come from many backgrounds, over 80% are orphans, and Sherab Ling strives to provide them with an environment where they can feel safe and secure and will be able to develop and help the children of the future.

Sherab Ling currently has 120 children in residence. The facilities however are stretched and there is currently nowhere for them to sleep or study.

The Translation and Printing Centre

The translation and printing centre will translate Tibetan texts and instructions into foreign languages and also translate foreign books of cultural and historic importance into Tibetan.

The centre will be fully equipped with modern facilities for printing and kind of text, book, card and poster in colour and black and white.

Sale of texts was the major source of income for Palpung Monastery in Tibet, and the work of the translation and printing centre should create a substantial income for Sherab Ling.

The Handicraft Centre

The handicraft centre will function as a training school where students will learn by practical experience through craftsmen taking apprentices. The centre will teach, and thereby preserve, the art of Tibetan religious painting, carpet weaving, wood carving, precious metal work, clay sculpturing and tailoring.

The craft centre will provide accommodation for the masters and apprentices as well as the workshops.

The Dairy and Botanical Gardens

It is also hoped that in the future it will be possible for a dairy to be founded at the monastery. This will provide the means for the monastery to supply much needed food supplements for the community. The dairy would have milking cows which would provide milk which in turn can be used for the production of butter, curd and cheese. This will provide essential protein supplements. Situ Rinpoche is keen for there to be a facility for the protection of the flora of this spectacular region of the Himalayas. The botanical gardens will both protect the flora and provide the ability to raise plants.
