Tormas

Tormas are offerings that are molded from dough into elaborate forms to be used in the prayer sessions.

The permanent tormas are made from a clay mixture and often filled with rolls of mantras to empower them.

Daily tormas are made from a doughy substance that is composed of flour and butter, flour and water, rice, or for longer lasting prayer sessions a special mixture is cooked.

The decorations that ornament the tormas are sculpted from coloured butter.

It takes many years to master torma making especially the elaborate complex decorations, and not everyone is gifted in sculpting, but it is necessary for all monks to go as far as they are able in these studies.
